What is a Hostname?

A hostname is a human-readable name assigned to a device on a network. It acts as an alias for the numerical IP address, making it easier to remember and use. For example, instead of typing a server's IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.1), you can use its hostname (e.g., server.example.com).

Understanding DNS (Domain Name System)

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical and decentralized naming system for computers, services, and other resources connected to the Internet or a private network. It translates hostnames into IP addresses, allowing users to access resources using domain names instead of IP addresses.

How DNS Resolution Works

1. A user enters a domain name (e.g., www.example.com) into their web browser.
2. The browser sends a query to a DNS resolver (usually provided by the user's ISP).
3. The DNS resolver queries DNS servers to find the IP address associated with the domain name.
4. The DNS server returns the IP address to the DNS resolver.
5. The DNS resolver returns the IP address to the browser.
6. The browser uses the IP address to connect to the web server hosting the website.
